Born and raised in Spanish Harlem – the son of an African American mother and Filipino father – Joe Bataan’s music is rooted in the sounds of Latin boogaloo and African American doo-wop and what grew from that combination of Latin music and Rhythm & Blues is what we now call Latin Soul.

Latin Soul has been described as a blend of the infectious rhythms of Mambo, R&B and Latin Jazz. Joe Bataan found his first success in 1967 performing a Latin dance cover of the Curtis Mayfield hit song “Gypsy Woman”.

In 1995 with the release of his album “Call My Name” Joe Bataan emerged from a 20 year sabbatical working as a youth counselor with street kids back onto the music recording and stage performance scene.
